The etymology of the word psychedelic has long been understood to mean "mind-manifesting." Yet, originally, the term psyche referred to the soul, thus resonating with the word entheogen, which etymologically means "to be inspired or possessed by the divine." These two notions remind us that a true psycho-spiritual dynamic is at work in psychedelic experiences. And yet, even in the era of growing recognition of psychedelics, the place of the soul remains in the background.
How might our understanding of psychedelics evolve if we viewed them through the lens of the soul? As their therapeutic use becomes more widespread, what role does the soul play in the psychedelic experience and its effects? How can we reintegrate soul, essence, and the spiritual into discussions of healing and personal growth? What does the process of soul-making and soul retrieval look like in the psychedelic experience and integration?
